Identity Theft Through Job Sites on Rise

A reader of the site sent me an e-mail indicating that some of the ads on Craigslist may be hooks for identity thieves. I’ve sent my resume out so many times I am wondering if there are several of me going around and using credit cards by now. He said to be careful sending out resumes, which I agree with if you are looking for a freelance writing job rather than a full-time job. Even if you are looking for a full-time job, it can’t hurt to drop them an e-mail and ask for the name of the company as you are concerned about identity theft; just be aware that some HR types may not get back to you.

I think the best defense is to be proactive about your credit. Check your credit report once every couple of months to ensure that your credit is still intact, or in my case at least hanging on by a fingernail. I’m not going to recommend any companies on here for fear of this sounding like a “plug post”, they are easy enough to find online.

Business Week confirms that CraigsList is a home to these fraudsters in this article; if you just want the bit about CraigsList skip to the end.
