I’m still digesting James Chartrand’s story, which if you hadn’t read yet, I highly recommend doing so. The reaction of most guys that hear it seem to be “I don’t care” and “there was some other reason, it wasn’t just that she was a woman”. I’m a little shocked by the former, and I can’t quite agree with the latter since James unequivocally states that the turnaround was instant as soon as she adopted a male moniker.

This takes me back to Grade 4. My dad managed computer systems for a large governmental organization back then. Seeing all of the brightly coloured knobs and buttons (in an area where you were NOT supposed to take your kids on take your kids to work day, I might add) instilled a fascination in me for computers. As soon as an “After 4” class came up on how to program computers, I was enrolled and ready to learn some programming.

The instructor took me aside after his introductory talk when everyone had been installed on their Commodore 64’s, and promptly told me that girls weren’t cut out to learn how to use computers. He told me to sit out of the lessons, and gave me free reign to mess about on the computer while he was teaching. He stated that he wouldn’t answer any of my questions or help me at all. I was too young to realize that this man was just a pure ass, and rather than ratting him out to my mother, decided to use the time.

I started messing with the display properties of the screen, which were so rudimentary back then it wasn’t funny. I started playing with the extremely basic graphics programs. I learned what hexadecimal colour properties were. I even followed along in a textbook I found in a desk and started teaching myself BASIC. I had completed a few of the lessons that I wasn’t supposed to understand, and at that point the teacher started to take an interest in what I was doing. He told me that it was my age more than my gender that had led him to say the things he did, and since I could get this stuff I was welcome to sit in on the lessons. I told him I was happier doing what I was doing.

To this day, with the exception of a few night school classes paid for by my old employer in PERL, ASP and other scary monsters that nobody really uses anymore, my computer learning is self-taught. I’ve helped countless people I know with their websites when they get “stuck” on something, and have programmed and designed the odd one myself. For the past few years, web design has truly become a designer’s game, forcing me more into the writing side of things where I excel anyway. The strength I drew from being told that “you can’t do that” turned into a lifelong obsession with doing that, and doing it well.

There are still a great many people of the same mindset of that computer teacher. Sexism is something that just comes out when it feels safe, not something that has been eradicated. This is simply one of the many cold realities of the world that we have to work with and build on. One day we may hope to change it, but as James Chartrand has so aptly demonstrated, this is not that day.

  1. I hadn’t heard of this story myself until now, but it certainly doesn’t surprise me. Good on you for being self-taught for all of that confusing computer stuff (you sound like you excelled much more that way). It’s truly a shame when any person (male or female) deals with another through their prejudices.
