    Hi,

I was wondering if you had any opinions about finding work through temp agencies? I noticed the 3 copyeditor positions posted are through a temp aganecy, but I don’t know if it’s a good idea to go this route or not?

    Hey Kate:

Depends on the job and the temp agency. Google them and make sure that they have been in business for a while, if they haven’t ask if you can have more details about their company before applying for the position. A legitimate operation wouldn’t hesitate to answer such a request.

In Ottawa, nearly all writer positions are contracted out through temp agencies. It isn’t an uncommon practice to see jobs in Toronto through the Bagg Group or Creative Niche, both of whom are completely legit. They will usually ask you to sign up with their agency to apply, something that should never cost you any money.

While I would like to post only jobs that are contracted out through the employer directly, employers often find it much easier to have an outside agency handle hiring of certain positions. I respect that and allow for it in what I post here.
